UK Mobile Ad Market Increases 100%

A new survey into mobile ad spending by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers has showed that the UK shunned the market trends for last year by increasing at a rate of 99.2% year on year to £28.6m.

The IAB made the choice to include mobile advertising after 3 mobile, O2, Orange, T-mobile and Vodafone signed up to become members. The survey includes mobile media spends but not SMS or MMS production and delivery costs.

Mobile display advertising, which encompasses banners, text links, tenancies pre-post roll and in-game, accounts for 49.8% of all mobile advertising spend and was worth £14.2m over the last year. Paid-for search advertising was worth £14.4m which contributed to 50.2% of all mobile ad spends.

The IAB is undertaking an investigation into the effectiveness of mobile advertising with the view to launching a ‘how to’ guide for marketers, on briefing, planning and executive campaigns. There is also a need to advise these marketers of paid-for search that they are contributing to these services, as many paid-for search marketers are unaware that they are actually using mobile ads in their paid-for search campaign, this is not down to some kind of clandestine approach from the companies selling the ads, but more likely down to the marketers understanding of the parameters of their search campaigns.

Jon Mew, IAB Head of Mobile, said that: “This study is a UK first and means the IAB can accurately prove and track how much marketers are spending on mobile ads. The sector is in its infancy but is considerably bigger than the market was expecting. Thanks to these landmark figures we know the real value of the mobile advertising industry, and will now be able to chart the medium’s growth with confidence.”

Internet Grows at 21% During the First Half of 2008

In a recent report published by the IAB, UK internet advertising agencies grew 21% year on year for the first two quarters of 2008. (Jan – June). The figures, from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers, put the total UK online ad expenditure at £1.7 billion for this period. In the same period last year, online advertising spend was £1.3 billion and the medium grew by 41.3% from £917.2 million year-on-year with online’s share growing to 15.3% for the whole of 2007, up from 11.4% for 2006.

Getting your website ranked high in the search on your high traffic keywords doesn’t have to be a black art.

Here are things to consider to get your site up in the rankings. First of all, let’s gain ranking in relevant keywords. For instance, if your site is about Pasta Sauce Recipes, before you attempt to get high ranking on this keyword you want to make sure your site is a relevant site for Pasta Sauces by gaining high rankings on other related niche keywords which have less competition than Pasta Sauce Recipes, Angel Hair Pasta, Bow Tie Pasta Tomato and Basil Pasta Recipes, Etc.

To find these keywords and determine your targets just use Google to check the competition for each of these words. Instead of trying for Pasta Sauce Recipes, which come up with 2,840,000 results, try to optimize on something like Pasta, which only has 115,000 results. Therefore the competition is much less. Bow Tie Pasta Recipes is 103,000 results. Recipes by the way gets 185,000,000 That would be a very difficult word to work with when trying to optimize your site. Once your have a good idea of keywords then you optimize again and use the optimization techniques; meta tags, keyword themes, article marketing etc. for the right ones to get higher rankings.

Now once you’ve found your keywords you still have to make your content unique, original and useful. Google likes content that is original, too much duplicate content and actually cause you to be penalized on Google. One simple way to determine of your content is common is buy taking a sentence or two, copy and paste into the google search and see if many results pop up.

In addition to these you must remember, you are in business because you’re an expert in something, a service, a product or your particular knowledge. No doubt there are others. If you use resources that may add to your service or knowledge and would be helpful to people who find your site, why not link to them?

Links on a website are the weaved threads of the web that allow you to “catch” more visitors. Now some folks go out and just add as many links as they can to the site but that is not necessarily useful. Just look for other sites that compliment your business or area of expertise and build high quality links to the relevance of your keyword terms.

Revenue from Paid Search Engine Traffic Sinking Fast

Is this a surprise to anyone? The point about the amount of money big companies are spending on search market advertising. There comes a certain that you have to think why spend even a dollar on paid search traffic? For example if you want to find something at a big brand store like Walmart are you going to go to a search engine to look for those names? Not at all you are going to type in kohls.com just like everyone else.

These are big name companies that have gone beyond the flood zone of flooding the internet marketing scene with their popularity of brand names and website addresses. Especially in a recession as bad as the one we are in right now I would be very surprise if any of the big nationally know companies are spending any marketing budgets on paid search engine marketing. So why did I point this out? Those stories that I was skimming through came across as another one of those negative doom and gloom blurbs that the recession is killing businesses. Enough already for goodness sakes we get it, the recession is hurting all of us we know! To me I just thought that the more obvious reason as to why paid search traffic revenue is so down is probably because some of the standard big spenders in the past have wizened up and figured out that they get the same results for the most part with out having to fund their search engine traffic because they have gone beyond that tipping point like I said and their brand names and websites are known on a national level. Why spend good money on something that everyone know by now like your website. The larger companies should not be wasting cash on stuff like that and that after all is good business sense.

Why The Search Engines Don’t Care About Your Website

It’s a fact. The search engines don’t really care about most websites. If the search engines could talk (perish the thought) they’d tell you that for most keywords, only the first page or two of results are really worthwhile. The relevancy drops off very quickly, and the remaining several million websites stored in their indexes are irrelevant, and invisible. If this sounds like the problem your website is facing, read on.

In order to rank well, you have to do certain basic things. You can’t expect to get to the top of the pile without any effort. To get your website near the top, you’re going to have to break a sweat. The ten rules that follow aren’t the only rules in the SEO game. But they are good ones. Use them all, diligently, and your site will start moving up the charts within a couple of months.

1. Stay organized. Develop good planning habits and record-keeping and stick to them.

2. Start with a good website. If you site is boring, uninformative, and unoriginal, why would the major search engines want to send visitors there? They wouldn’t. So build great content.

3. Directory submissions are nothing to get hung up on. Just do it and move on. Directories are a small piece of the puzzle, not a whole campaign. You can find suggestions for good directories at www.directorylist.org, www.isedb.com, and www.searchengineguide.com.

4. Write regularly and promote your articles online. This is the guts of your search engine optimization work. To get found on the internet, you have to get your name known in your niche. You also have to get links back to your site, so you can rise in the search engine rankings. 8. If organized link hunts are good, disorganized link hunting is just as good. Huh? Disorganized link hunting occurs when you track the competition to see who is linking to them. Then you go after the same links. That’s why it’s disorganized – you are just hunting around wherever your nose leads you. For in-depth tracking, consider the tracking service from www.googlealert.com. They are not a part of Google, but they track Google, and they are Google-approved.

9. Study your web statistics. For successful SEO, you must track who is coming to your site, how they are finding you, and how they navigate your site. Good stats packages can be found at www.google.com/analytics, as well as www.websidestory.com, and www.webtrends.com, to name a few.

10. Stay on top of the news, and be alert for random opportunity. This is often overlooked. When things happen in your industry – a new product, a show, a controversy – be ready to write about it. If you don’t, someone else will, and they will get all the links. If news breaks, talk about it in forums, on your website, and in your blog.
